When Choices Actually Matter
A lot of games promise your choices matter and then quietly funnel you back to the same ending. It's frustrating, because when branching is done well it's one of the most powerful things a small screen can offer.
The tell is early consequences. If a decision in the first hour visibly changes who's in your party or which areas open up, the writers were serious. Emberfall Saga does this by letting a companion leave for good based on how you treat them.
I've learned to play these first runs blind, no guides. The magic comes from living with your choices, even the bad ones. My first Emberfall run left me short a healer for the whole midgame, and honestly that made it more memorable.
If you want to see the branches, a second run is usually where a good narrative game earns its length. Just don't spoil yourself the first time through.
